Get the right binoculars for your African Safari
Thu, Feb 26, 2009
One of the most important items you can take with you on your African Safari adventure is a pair of binoculars. I have a feeling you already knew that - that’s why your reading. What I would like to talk about is a common mistake I hear people make when selecting binoculars for safari.
You have been planning this trip for some time and it’s a once in a lifetime experience. The landscapes and scenery are so different than what you experience at home. Wildlife normally only seen in zoo’s or television wll be in your field of view. Make sure you have the right binoculars.
How to select the right binoculars for Safari use.
Higher power magnification. Not too much magnification, but something with 10x or 12x magnification will be the right choice. It is a much more wide open area for observing, and many 8 power binoculars may not be enough to get you in on the details of that leopard.
Get a large objective lens binocular. Compact binoculars will be a mistake (unless your also taking a compact binocular with you). Many of your viewing opportunities will be in the early morning and at dusk when there is not as much light. The larger 40mm-50mm objective lens sizes will collect a lot of light for viewing in lower light conditions.
Make sure the binoculars are rugged and tough. Look for good waterproof binoculars, these binoculars are very tough and can take a jostle in your pack and during the long trip.
Don’t skimp on quality. This is a trip of a lifetime - and the whole point is the visual amazement of it. Don’t just take those old binoculars you have had in the closet for years. Getting a higher-end binocular with quality optics will ensure you see all the things you are supposed to.
